Sue Gunn on the work

Branching networks within the body mirror those found throughout the natural world, where veins, arteries, roots and rivers share a visual language of flow, movement and connection. Inspired in part by the artist’s husband’s heart bypass surgery, the work reflects on the body’s remarkable ability to adapt when established pathways are interrupted.

Working primarily by hand, the artist pushes clay beyond traditional forms, using the material to capture tension, change and redirection. Fluid lines are diverted, constrained and reformed, creating a piece that explores systems placed under pressure.

Stoneware clay and multiple glazes are integral to the work, shaping its surface, form and tactile quality. Traces of the making process remain visible, allowing the craftsmanship to become part of the experience of the finished piece.
