Sarah Loughlin on the work

Dwell #1 is woven from homegrown willow, gathered and harvested by the artist before being left to dry through autumn and winter. During this period, the artist turned to drawing, studying seeds and cones through charcoal and ink sketches and becoming particularly interested in forms designed to both protect and regenerate.

Those observations shaped the wider series from which Dwell #1 emerges. Its curves, rhythms and repetitions draw from structures found in nature, creating a sculptural form that carries a sense of shelter, protection and renewal.

Willow and willow bark give the piece its distinctive surface and tactile character, while the process of weaving remains visible throughout. Rather than concealing the hand of the maker, the craftsmanship becomes an integral part of the finished work.
