Sharon Bennett on the work
Palaya is a new collection by Twisted Eye, created from layers of contrasting native hardwoods and built around the natural colours found within British timber.
Rather than using dyes or paint, each timber species is chosen for its own tone, grain and character. Walnut brings deep chocolate tones, cherry adds a warm amber colour, elm gives a shimmering figure, while lime, sycamore, oak, yew, ash and beech each bring their own natural variation.
By combining end grain with long grain, the pieces have depth, texture and movement. Smaller pieces of timber that might otherwise be overlooked are also used, allowing the material itself to influence the design. This means every Palaya piece is genuinely unique.
For the Decorex x AEVEN exhibition, Twisted Eye would like to create a Palaya carver chair with a solid cherry seat and backrest, chosen for its pale amber colour. The chair will be finished in gloss to enhance the richness of the timber and give it a smooth, contemporary feel.
Some details may evolve during the making process, including the shape of the seat, frame and arms. A steel core will be used within the layered sections to help connect the structure and ensure solidity.
Twisted Eye is also in discussion with Freya Roze of F.ROZE about collaborating on a cushion for the chair.
Palaya reflects Twisted Eye’s wider approach to furniture: traditional making skills, responsible use of natural materials, experimentation and a contemporary design perspective. The aim is for it to become a signature design for the brand.
