Oliver Spendley on the work

Deep Time is an intuitive exploration of Lewisian Gneiss, one of the oldest rock formations found in the British Isles. Working with stone gathered in the Highlands, the artist cuts and grinds into the material without a fixed idea of the final form, allowing the process itself to guide the work.

As the surface is gradually revealed, hidden patterns and layers begin to emerge. Two small areas are deliberately left unpolished, creating windows into the stone as it was found and setting its raw, natural character against the worked surface.

The result is a piece shaped as much by instinct and discovery as by the material itself.
