Tom Faulkner on the work
The Skye Bench is a monolithic, arched form in satin steel – as sculptural as it is functional, equally suited to being sat on or simply admired as an object in its own right. Tom had standing stones in the back of his mind when he designed it – ancient monoliths that hold a landscape rather than simply sit within it. He imagined the piece set among the craggy outcrops and still lakes of the Isle of Skye, and wanted the bench to carry some of that same rawness and elegance. The bench is shaped from sheet steel, cut and rolled under great force, then welded and finished by hand. The material transforms the piece – the arch reads almost as if it's emerging from the ground, half-submerged, while the polished steel around it stays clean and controlled.
