Mandie Beuzeval on the work
Seam features a composition of wood inlays, intricately cut, shaped and arranged against a hardwood backdrop. Working with a limited vocabulary of ten different shapes, Mandie layers and places each one to build geometric patterns that contrast with the darker inlays.
Each piece is set within an ebonised cherry frame. The work draws on the textures, angles and shapes Mandie encounters in both the natural and urban landscapes surrounding her East London workshop. Tucked beneath a railway arch, the studio sits between these two worlds: nearby trees carry the markings of beetle activity and fungal growth, while missing bricks and shifting structures in the built environment create their own unexpected patterns.
Those small observations feed directly into the work, turning irregularities, traces and interruptions into the starting point for a carefully constructed composition. The result is a wall piece that rewards closer looking, with natural material and precise geometry sitting side by side.
